Boardgame afternoon with friends

Yesterday we were with friends for a boardgame afternoon - grilling included!

We started off with the Spiel des Jahres (game of the year): Colt Express.

In this game every player tried to rob the same train, while the marshall tries his best to prevent this. But since this game isn't played in teams, the other players are your enemies as well and you have to try your best to take away as much as possible.

The mechanics of the game - each player plays one card into a pool of actions in the middle of the table, sometimes hidden though - reminded me a lot of RoboRally, since your actions sometimes don't end up the ones you wanted them to be.

Conclusion: a really nice game, with a nice replay ability and which deserves it's titel Spiel des Jahres

Next we played King of New York. It's quite similar to King of Tokyo as you roll dice and beat each other up, but it got more complex, because the faces of the die with the victory points have been converted to three new actions.

Conclusion: still a good game, but no anymore a game you play just in between, as it can get quite complicated

Then we tried our luck with Good Cop Bad Cop, a game of deduction to find out who are the honest and who are the currupt cops around the table. The victory is determined by the groupd who manages to eliminate the other group's leader.

Conclusion: quite interesting concept, but the additional equipment cards are not well balanced, which dulls the fun a bit

The Kennerspiel des Jahres (game of the year for advanced gamers) - Broom Service - was next on our list. This time around we (almost) played with the correct rules and with five players. So we sold potions and dispelled clouds, while being either brave or cowardly - just like all witches and druids do.

Conclusion: even with the second time around, my dear didn't like the game at all and the rest of the players (I think) weren's very hooked to the game as well - so it's probably off to a dark corner somewehre

The last game we played as also about witches, which was surprisingly called Witches. It's a card game where you want to collect as little points as possible.

Conclusion: I guess since it was quite late, we weren't all that thrilled to play the game, but it's definately a game for people who like card games with a twist
