At the beach!

Yesterday we slept longer and made ourselves a great breakfast.

After that some of us went shopping a second time, while the rest of us were playing another game of Love Letter. Following that we stowed away the groceries and then we went together to the beach.

After our return the rest of the group of our meetup arrived one after the other and in the evening we had our first feast - spaghetti - together. Of course there was also enough liquid nurishment (some of it self brewed) in beer form.

In the evening we started playing a game of Aargh! Tect and Dead Panic before we finally came all back to Werewolves - last year'smost favorite game. After several rounds we all were quite tired and called it a night, but today we all hope for many games.

Gestern haben wir länger geschlafen und uns dann ein sehr gutes Frühstück gemacht.

Danach ist dann ein Teil zum zweiten Mal einkaufen gefahren, die restlichen Gäste haben währenddessen wieder eine Runde Love Letter gespielt. Anschließend haben wir dann den Einkauf verstaut und sind dann gemeinsam zum Strand spazieren gegangen.

Nach der Rückkehr sind dann nach und nach die restlichen Teilnehmer des Meetups eingetroffen und am Abend haben wir dann das erste große Essen - Spaghetti - zusammen genossen. Natürlich gab es auch genug flüssige Nahrung in Form von (teils selbst gebrautem) Bier.

Den Abend haben wir dann zunächst mit einer Partie Aargh! Tect und Dead Panic begonnen und sind schließlich, wie immer, bei Werwölfe vom Düsterwald gelandet. Nach etlichen Runden sind wir dann alle recht müde ins Bett gefallen und hoffen heute auf einen langen spielereichen Tag.

Haarlem

Yesterday in the morning we went with a friend around Haarlem, which lead to a lot of pictures and purchases. Here are some of those.

Afterwards we packed our stuff and played car-tetris with the luggage, which worked out quite well: the car was full, but we got everything in. After arriving at the house we went for the first big shopping tour and we bought much to drink and eat - but there are still more people coming.

In the evening we played being caveman architects and afterwards we guessed things with Concept.

The cat sleeps better now that my parents are taking good care of her.

Gestern waren wir am Vormittag mit unserem Freund in Haarlem unterwegs, was zu vielen Bildern und einigen Einkäufen geführt hat. Hier ein kurzer Auszug davon.

Danach haben wir unsere Sachen zusammengepackt und haben Auto-Tetris mit dem Gepäck gespielt, was ziemlich gut ausgegangen ist: das Auto war voll, aber alles war untergebracht. Am Haus angekommen sind wir dann noch zum ersten großen Einkauf gefahren und haben kistenweise Getränke und etliches Essbares eingekauft - schließlich kommen noch mehr Leute hier an.

Am Abend dann haben wir zuerst Höhlenmenschen gespielt und danach mit Begriffen erraten mit Concept gespielt.

Die Mieze-Katze schläft inzwischen schon besser, da sie gut von meinen Eltern versorgt wird.

We have arrived at Amsterdam

Yesterday we started our vacation to the Netherlands. But first our cats didn't want us to leave and sat in our suitcase so that we won't go.

But this was in vain and my father was kind enough to bring us to the airport. There - after checking in - we went on in our search for something to eat and want on to the Starbucks, like we always do. But this time there was a change, since part of the airport is being renovated, the part where the Starbucks was located as well. So we went to the Tiroler Hof (so something like that) for lunch, which was neither cheap nor very good.

Our flight was delayed, but the plane didn't arrive in time.

Never the less we arrived on time at Amsterdam and a friend of ours picked us up. He brought us back to his flat, but before that we went quickly shopping for groceries. We stayed for our first night here at his and his girlfriend's place. And naturally we played some board games on our first evening.

At home our cats will be looked after by my parents and probably sleep a lot.

Gestern ging es los in den Urlaub und zwar in die Niederlande. Doch zunächst wollten uns die Katzen nicht weglassen und haben sich in unsere Koffer gelegt damit wir ja nicht weggehen.

Doch das half alles nichts und mein Vater war so nett und hat uns zum Flughafen gebracht. Dort waren wir - nach dem Einchecken - auf der Suche nach etwas Essbarem und sind wie immer zum Starbucks gegangen. Nur leider diesmal mit dem Unterschied, dass es an der bekannten Stelle nicht mehr zu finden war: Umbauarbeiten. Also haben wir im Tiroler Hof (oder so) zu Mittag gegessen, nicht billig aber dafür auch nicht übermäßig gut.

Der Flug hatte etwas Verspätung, weil die Maschine recht spät gelandet war.

Trotzdem sind wir pünktlich in Amsterdam gelandet und wurden am Flughafen von einem Freund abgeholt. Diese brachte uns - nach einem kurzen Abstecher zum Einkaufen von Lebensmittel - zu sich nach Hause wo wir die erste Nacht verbringen durften. Natürlich nicht ohne gleich ein paar Brettspiele auszuprobieren.

Zuhause sind die Katzen dank meiner Eltern gut versorgt und schnarchen vermutlich viel.

Shopping spree

Yesterday went were last minute shopping for our vacation and that's why we went to the outlet center in Parndorf. Besides the suitcase we wanted to have we also bought enough cloths for the next few years and for lunch we decided to visit the Coffeeshop Company.

The rest of the afternoon we did some prepatations for the vacation and some more shopping, this time for our cats. Somewhat tired we went into bed and slept a bit before the big day would arrive.

In the evening we then went on to watch two more old episodes of Top Gear before finally going to bed for good.

Gestern waren wir noch schnell die letzten Einkäufe für den Urlaub machen und dazu sind wir nach Parndorf gefahren. Neben dem Wunschkoffer haben wir auch noch genug Gewand für die nächsten Jahre eingekauft und zu Mittag waren wir bei der Coffeeshop Company essen.

Den restlichen Nachmittag haben wir dann noch mit Vorbereitungen auf den Urlaub verbracht bzw. mit einkaufen für die Katzen. Etwas müde sind wir dann noch ins Bett gefallen und haben vorgeschlafen.

Am Abend dann waren noch zwei alte Episode von Top Gear am Programm bevor wir endgültig ins Bett umgefallen sind.

Film review: Edge of Tomorrow

It's the second consecutive week we went to the cinema, because the movies sounded quite interesting. This week: Edge of Tomorrow with Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt.

The events leading to this film are presented with cleverly cut tv news segments: aliens - so called mimics - have attacked Earth and started by invading Germany, quickly follwed by the rest of the European main land. Before they could cross over the channel to England the combined military forces of Earth had a major victory and now the time has come for the final showdown on the French coast.

Major Cage (Tom Cruise), an american PR-officer, is being sent to the front lines by the commanding general to lift the morale of the troops and the people watching from home. But the major has no combat experience and is interested in dying for the general's propaganda. So he is stripped of his rank and branded a desserter and is to be send to the front lines anyway, as a private and as a major anymore.

He can't convince his commanding sergeant of his situation, so he is shipped with the rest of the troops to the french coast in the next morning. But the planned surprise attack doesn't happen because the mimics knew that they were coming and a blood bath arises. Private Cage manages to kill one alien with a lot of luck, but dies with him ...

... and wakes up the day before this big battle. He is reliving those two days over and over again. This time loop ends only with his death. He's looking for help and finally manages to get it from the Angel of Verdun - the very soldier that brought Earth the only victory thus far in the battle against the mimics. She does believe his story - because she too had this power the relive the previous day - and helps him to train him to increase his chances of survival. But still there has to be done something so that the whole affair finds an end ...

The moive is well made and uses a lot of story telling techniques, which one wouldn't expect in this kind of action movie. That's why I think it is worth watching. The countless deaths of Tom Cruise have a lot of black comedy in them, but they are never tasteless. In fact most of the time he's dying off-screen, but the audiance still knows how.

The story is quite good and the explanation for the time loop, especially it's conclusion, is quite believable. Tom Cruise also isn't the tough super hero and this helps the movie a lot. On the whole it's a science fiction film worth seeing.


Since we were around town at noon we decided to take our lunch at Sichuan.

In the evening we watched the last two episodes of Defiance's season one - the second season can come now!

Die zweite Woche in Folge sind wir ins Kino gegangen, weil es wirklich interessante Filme gespielt hat. Diese Woche: Edge of Tomorrow mit Tom Cruise und Emily Blunt.

Die Vorgeschichte wird schnell mit geschnittenen Newsmeldungen aus dem Fernsehen erzählt: Ausserirdische - die sogenannten Mimics - haben die Erde angegriffen und zunächst Deutschland erobert und schließlich das gesamte restliche europäische Festland. Bevor sie nach England übersetzen konnten haben die Erdstreitkräfte allerdings einen wichtigen Sieg errungen und nun ist es an der Zeit an der französischen Küste die Endschlacht zu schlagen.

Major Cage (Tom Cruise), ein amerikanischer PR-Offizier, wird vom schlachtführenden General an die Front geschickt um die Moral der Truppen und der Daheimgebliebenen zu erhöhen. Doch der Major hat keine Kampferfahrung und auch keine Lust für seine Propaganda zu sterben. Also wird er kurzerhand als Deserteur deklariert und trotzdem an die Front geschickt, halt als Private und nicht als Major.

Nachdem er seinen vorgesetzen Sergeant nicht davon überzeugen kann, dass das ein Missverständnis ist, wird er am nächsten Morgen mit den Truppen über dem Stand von Frankreich abgeworfen. Doch der Überraschungsangriff ist keiner und die Mimics schlachten die Erdsoldaten ab. Private Cage schafft es durch Glück einen dieser Aliens zu töten, stirbt jedoch selber dabei ...

... und wacht am Vortag der Endschlacht wieder auf. Er erlebt diese beiden Tage immer und immer wieder. Diese Zeitschleife wird nur durch seinen Tod ausgelöst. Er sucht nach Hilfe und findet sie ausgerechnet beim Engel von Verdun - jene Soldatin, die den einzigen Sieg bis dahin gegen die Mimics erzielen konnte. Sie glaubt ihm - denn diese Fähigkeit hatte sie auch - und hilft ihm durch Training seine Überlebenschance zu erhöhen. Doch irgendwas müssen sie machen, damit das Ganze ein Ende findet ...

Der Film ist sehr gut gemacht und setzt bewusst erzählerische Techniken ein, die man eigentlich bei einem solchen Actionfilm nicht erwarten würde. Daher ist er meiner Meinung nach auch sehenswert. Die unzähligen Tode von Tom Cruise sind auch teilweise mit recht schwarzem Humor versehen, allerdings nie geschmacklos. Meist stirbt der Gute außerhalb des Kamerabereichs, aber man weiß trotzdem immer wie.

Die Story ist gut und die Erklärung für die Zeitschleife bzw. dann der Ausgang derselben ist auch relativ glaubwürdig. Tom Cruise ist jetzt auch diesmal nicht der Superheld und das tut dem Film auch sehr gut. Alles in allem ein sehenswerte Science Fiction Film.


Zu Mittag waren wir heute übrigens unterwegs und haben dann im Sichuan zu Mittag gegessen.

Und am Abend haben wir dann noch die letzten beiden Episoden von der ersten Staffel Defiance geschaut - die zweite kann kommen!

Und der Kater kann auch mal bedrohlich schauen - na ja, fast:

John Malkovich is Blackbeard!

Yesterday we didn't sleep that long, but at least we didn't have to take any breakfast since we were going to a brunch at Brandauer.

Well filled we then went on a walk and when we finally came home we fell back into our beds - which our cats also liked because they joined us. After we were up again we did the chores and I played a bit in Guild Wars 2 afterwards. Not for long though and so we ended up on our beloved couch soon after that.

At first we watched the pilot for the new pirate serie Crossbones with John Malkovich as Blackbeard. The series is quite brutal, but the first episode posed enough questions that one wants to find the answers to that perhaps we'll continue to watch this series.

The second series we watched was of course Defiance, which nears the end of the season.

Cats love to sleep - especially on spots where others cats usually like to sleep:

Gestern haben wir nicht ganz so lange geschlafen, aber zumindest kein Frühstück gebraucht, da wir zu Mittag bei einem Brunch beim Brandauer waren.

Gut gefüllt sind wir dann nachher noch etwas Spazierengegangen und sind dann zuhause erschöpft ins Bett gefallen - sehr zum Wohlwollen der Katzen. Als wir dann alle wieder aufgestanden waren, haben wir noch etwas Hausarbeit erledigt und ich bin dann noch in Guild Wars 2 herumgelaufen. Allerdings nicht sehr lange und so sind wir dann auf die abendlichen Couch gefallen.

Diesmal gab es zunächst die Pilotfolge der neuen Piratenserie Crossbones mit John Malkovich als Blackbeard. Die Serie ist ein wenig brutal, aber der Pilot wirft genug Fragen auf, die man beantwortet wissen will, sodass man sie sich vielleicht weiter anschauen wird.

Als zweites haben wir dann noch Defiance weitergeschaut und sind damit schon bald am Ende der Staffel angelangt.

Of Mice and Mystics

The first day of my vacation - ok saturday would have been a free day anyway - started with some well earned sleeping time. Afterwards we went shoping to the local street market to buy some things for the coming days. Normally we would have gone for lunch at Sichuan, but we decided to eat just a bite on our ways, because we were to visit some friends of ours in the afternoon.

Once we arrived at their place we were "ambushed" by a delicious lemon tart, which we were almost forced to taste. So that's why we ate so little for lunch.

Afterwards I wanted to help with the installation of a wireless router as a repeater, but after 2 unsuccessful hours I quit and we headed on to boardgaming. We played Mice and Mystic and were quite successful, as we managed to defeat the kitchen tomcat twice during our adventures. And every once in awhile uncle Joerg was contiuing to read the story of the mice.

After finishing the faery tales from mouse-land we came back to our cats back home, which were already waiting for us. So we quickly fed and played with them before we sat down on the couch to watch some more episodes of Defiance.

Am ersten echten Urlaubstag - ok Samstag wäre so oder so frei gewesen - haben wir uns ein wenig ausschlafen können und sind dann zum Markt gegangen um noch ein bisschen etwas einkaufen zu gehen. Diesmal waren wir allerdings nicht beim Sichuan zum Mittagessen, wie haben nur eine Kleinigkeit gegessen, weil wir dann schon wieder zu Freunden unterwegs waren.

Dort angekommen haben wir gleich die köstlichem Lemon-Tarts probieren dürfen - deswegen auch gleich wenig zu Mittag gegessen.

Danach wollte ich mit dem Einrichten eines WLAN-Routers als Repeater helfen, doch nach mehr als 2 Stunden ohne Erfolg haben wir es dann gelassen und sind zum Brettspielen übergegangen. Wir haben Mice and Mystic gespielt und waren dabei sehr erfolgreich - sogar die Hauskatze in der Küche haben wir zweimal erfolgreich überwunden. Zwischendurch hat dann Onkel Jörg immer die Geschichte weitererzählt.

Nach den Märchen aus dem Mäuseland sind wir dann zu unseren Katzen nach Hause gefahren, die schon auf uns gewartet haben. Also schnell gefüttert und gespielt und dann ab auf die Couch um wieder ein paar Folgen von Defiance zu schauen.
